I wash off certain papers and am usually able to reclaim some portion of the paper for minis or smaller matted pieces. But in this case I use the whole washed off piece of paper. You know we artists just can't bring ourselves to through away a good piece of paper just because our attempt at a painting failed.

You can see that the failed painting was in a vertical format, a painting of trees, I reoriented the paper horizontally so as not to be influenced by the ghost image left behind from the wash off.
You can see the trees on the left still visible. My photo reference to the right. the photo was taken at a several thousand acre farm that plants this huge field of sunflowers.I painted there with some friends and also took some photo references. It was so exciting to see their cheery faces move with the sun.
I love to paint this crow. There is something about this bird that is so quirky. I took many photos of him as he posed for me while at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, thus I call this 6 x 8 Pastel, " Canyon Crow" I have painted him in oils and very large in Acrylics too. I never tier of painting him.
Had to put my acrylics aside to get down to the business of painting 3 pastel painting for the up coming dead line for our Georgia Pastel Society Competition. Here are the 3 I entered and will keep my fingers crossed that at least one gets in. Hope you find them worthy.Virginia Dauthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15863046934574065308noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-809103354489176721.post-30219846821926397632013-02-02T17:07:00.001-08:002013-02-02T17:07:20.806-08:00No Glass Over Pastels -Hummmm! Don,t you just hate having to put glass over pastels, the cutting of glass, the cleaning and not to mention the weight. Here are a few small pastels that I experimented with using wax melted with a heat gun. As we know any liquid will alter the colors so it is best to use very vibrant colors when doing this. This way the colors will not darken down so much.
I purchased some wax beads, painted a few small pieces and gave it a shot. As I said, I have a heat gun, inexpensive ( with a Hobby Lobby or Michael's coupon ), I sprinkled the wax beads on top and held the heat gun at a distance till the wax started to melt. The blower of the heat gun will move the melted wax around. It created an interesting look. I don't think this will work on a large painting but if you have a painting that is not a keeper then give it a try. It was fun to play.

The first one is the most successful.
Lately, I enjoy painting water and try to get the feeling of what it is like to be near the water in the woods. We all know how wonderful the air feels, cool and refreshing.

The size of this piece is a 9 x 12 on U-Art paper.

I toned the paper with a light water color wash just to kill the white of the paper.

Then I started with the placement of the large rock on the left side.
I progressed on filling in the dense trees, no sky, just the feel of being by the coolness of the river. This surface is hard to work with in that size as La Carte is fairly grainy. I usually us it for a full sheet painting but I thought I would give it a try.
The painting on the bottom left was done on Wallis sanded, the rest on La Carte.
